I was playing around with some geometric shapes, making little card models, and looking at fractal forms in succulents. It was around the time I was exhibiting a lot of garden-related pieces so I decided to make some planters based on star shapes; 6, 7, and 8-pointed stars.
The photos below illustrate the process : the scale models, then a drawing (of the 8-point version), then a set of full-size models made from foam board and gumstrip. Once I'd got the shape I had the parts laser-cut in mild-steel sheet, and got my old friend 'Bashing' Billy Jeffries to fold them and weld them up. The finished planters were then zinc-coated to prevent rust, and powder-coated in colours to match my French tables and benches, and Bird-houses.
They are called Star-Star after a song by the Rolling Stones. I exhibited these at Chelsea Flower Show for several years and they went down well. Not now available as a stock item but can be made to order in any colour.
