Double Dovetail Bench

Double Dovetail Bench

Double Dovetail Bench

I was asked to make a special piece for the Contemporary Craft Fair in 2009 and I designed this bench. The idea was that it would look very clean and simple, but in fact be very complicated to make, and thus sort out the craftsmen from the stylists. All the components slot together in an unobtrusive way and are finally held in place with pairs of wedged 'double dovetails' (an Arts & Crafts device) holding the seat boards together, and at the same time fixing them to the legs and frame.
Master cabinetmaker Jeremy Higson made this piece very beautifully in Elm and Sycamore. Due to the time-consuming nature of the construction it was originally priced at £2000.
