Ariege Sideboard

In 2013 I was working on some new cabinet designs with Sarah Kay at her workshop in the Ariege area of France. Sarah later was invited by Contemporary Applied Arts to submit a piece for their stand at Design Shanghai 2014. We had been working on ideas for 'cabinets on stands' and decided to make a very up-market one-off version of one of our designs. The idea was to show the Best of British and so we asked master-cabinetmaker and veneer expert Jeremy Higson to make the piece. The drawer cabinet and 'pot board' are in Rippled Sycamore, and the handles and stands are in European Oak. Left and right are two deep drawers, with two shallower drawers in the centre, leather lined. The veneers are arranged in squares with the grain direction alternating. Rippled Sycamore has a sort of 3D effect, often called 'fiddle-back'.

This very beautifully crafted sideboard has been to China and back, has been exhibited at the CAA Gallery in London, and subsequently at the Real Craft exhibition that I curated at New Brewery Arts and is still in near-perfect condition. The exhibition price was £7,250. I have many more photos which I am happy to send to anyone who is interested.

The price does not include delivery, please let me know where you are and I'll find the most cost-effective way of getting it to you.
